Research shows that moderate alcohol consumption has many benefits. Many of us trying to lose weight cut out alcohol but don't realize that we are also not getting the health benefits that alcohol has to offer. Even better, we have known of the health benefits of red wine for a while, but it looks like the benefits are in the alcohol itself. It doesn't seem to matter the source.
- Moderate alcohol consumption can cut your risk of heart disease by up to 40%, according to a review of more than 100 prospective studies from the Harvard School of Public Health.
- According to a 2010 study published in The Archives of Internal medicine, women who one or two drinks a day are less likely to gain weight than those who don't drink at all.
- A 2005 report in Diabetes Care found that moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 30%.
- A Loyola University study found that moderate drinkers were 23% less likely to develop cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia compared to non-drinkers.
- Moderate alcohol consumption also reduces gallstones.
The key here is moderate alcohol consumption (up to 1-2 drinks a day). The difference between poison and a cure is the dose. People who have problems with alcohol should not consume alcohol. The risks outweigh the benefits in these cases. Use your judgement and figure out what works best for you.
