For the past ten years or so, I have been living with a condition called geographic tongue. While it looks weird, doctors claim that it is harmless. Most of the time, it was painless, but, once in a while, my tongue would become more inflamed and hurt. The cause of geographic tongue is unknown; although, it may be related to yeast or allergies. Both of which make sense in my life; however, whether or not allergies or yeast was acting up, the geographic tongue remained. I also had ridges along the sides of my tongue due to imprintation of teeth against an inflamed tongue. I had actually started working through an elimination diet to figure out what was causing the inflammation (or even geographic tongue) when I accidentally discovered the cure. I feel like Jonas Salk!
I was watching Dr. Oz, and he had an Ayurvedic specialist as his guest. Being trained in many different nutritional theories, including Ayurveda, I was familiar with much of what she had to say. She introduced the Ayurvedic herb neem, with which I am not familiar, and showed different products ranging from herbal supplements to skin care products. Then, she talked about neem toothpaste. She said that she hates to floss but has used neem toothpaste most of her life, and her dentist can't figure out why she doesn't have any buildup. Now, I floss pretty regularly and still get a ton of plaque buildup; so, I was certainly intrigued. The next day, I went to the Whole Foods near me and found the only neem toothpaste they had in stock: TheraNeem Organix Neem Toothpaste with Cinnamon.* I brushed that night with the toothpaste and noticed an immediate result in the morning. My breath certainly wasn't minty fresh, but I didn't have stale morning breath, either. I also didn't have that film over my teeth that I usually wake up to. Thinking that was a great benefit, I was already impressed and continued to use the toothpaste twice a day. Within a week, though, something (seemingly) miraculous and unexpected happened. The inflammation in my tongue reduced immensely, and my geographic tongue was pretty much gone. I haven't had a "normal" tongue in over TEN YEARS!
I stated earlier that I had started an elimination diet, but I hadn't actually yet made any changes diet that I hadn't experimented with previously. The only new change I had made was my toothpaste. Now, there are other herbs in this toothpaste; so, I can't be 100% sure if it's the neem or another ingredient that has caused this effect. Doing a little research (or rather Google search of "geographic tongue neem toothpaste"), I have found a couple of other people who have had similar experiences.
If anybody has struggled with geographic tongue and/or experimented with neem, please share below. I would love to learn more about your experiences. As I further experiment with neem in other forms, I will also continue to share.
* I don't usually endorse a particular product or brand, but, due to the impact this toothpaste has had, I couldn't keep it to myself. These are my experiences and opinions and are in no way meant to diagnose or treat any disorder or disease. I am not paid by TheraNeem Organix or any other entity for this post. (I, however, would certainly consider being a paid spokesperson if the opportunity arises.)
